Taste and Experience

Blacktail Mountain Watermelon is your typically sweet watermelon and has an unusually darkly saturated rind and flesh. A big hit with those in colder climates due it’s short growing cycle (producing fruit in as little as 70 days!). Plus, blacktail mountain produces typically big, ready-for-the-picnic watermelons that can grow up to 12lbs.

How To Grow Them

Grow Blacktail Mountain Watermelon as you would with any other: full sun, rich and well-irrigated soil, and plenty of space. Blacktail Mountain Watermelons are also well adapted to colder climates and are a big hit with Northern farmers (but grow well in the South as well).

Background

Blacktail Watermelons were originally developed by Glenn Drowns in the 1970s in northern Idaho at the Sand Hill Preservation Center. Glenn bred the Blacktail Mountain Watermelon in order to have a melon that would ripen during Idaho’s short growing season (and did it when he was only 20 years old). Today, blacktail mountain has become a garden favorite among home gardeners across the United States.
